Artist Statement

I am using art as a way to explore the nature of existence. The artistic process offers alternate channels for interpreting important ideas. Physical artworks express abstract concepts non-verbally and non-analytically. An artistic approach is useful in order to perceive a topic more fully.

With me, art is always an experiment, an exploration, a way to understand the world and its happenings. Art is a way of thinking and processing the broad strokes and nuances of existence. I like science and understand how an analytic approach can be clarifying but the artistic way aligns even better with how everything actually is. I use a variety of materials and methods in my art, painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, metal, and mixed media.

"Shields: Symbols for Protection" is a series of drawings inspired by the astounding fighting shields of Melanesia with their powerful symbolic designs. My drawings are paint and graphite on gessoed paper with unique abstract images intended as symbolic shields. The monochromatic palette and high contrast design focuses attention on the forms and projects a strong presence.

Times are turbulent and life is challenging. My response was to draw. My intention was to bolster my spirits against the unavoidable feelings of loss, grief, and angst and to offer a measure of solace to all.
