Magda Petmeza

Artist Statement

Magda Petmeza is an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of sculpture, painting, and video. Her work explores personal identity, through the experience of living in the Greek diaspora, exploring themes such as the erosion of memory over time and personal heritage.
Through her art, Magda investigates and seeks to answer the timeless question: What does it mean to return home? By stripping away the material aspects of home—such as plaster and four walls—what feeling remains that leads us to a sense of belonging?
Magda has received the Stella and Sumner Cooper Award for Outstanding Works in Ceramics (2022), the Yousuf Karsh Photography Award (2020), and the Tufts Dean’s Research Award for Extraordinary Artistic Endeavors (2021). Her work has been published in Asterisk: Yale’s Journal for Art and Art History (2021), Hamburger Eyes Magazine (2021), and Parallaxi Magazine (2020). Her photo book, Octopus Nipples, is part of the collection of the W. Van Alan Clark Library at Tufts University.
Since 2023, she has been working as the Head of Arts at the “Ioannis M. Carras” Kindergarten of Athens College. She has assumed a curatorial position, organizing exhibitions that showcase student artworks alongside renowned Greek artists such as Alekos Fassianos, Aphrodite Liti, Alexandra Athanasiadi, and Giorgos Hadoulis.
