Annette Thor
Artist Statement
My work explores color, memory, and emotional residue through layered abstraction. I build each painting intuitively, allowing drips, marks, scraping, and repeated gestures to create a surface that feels both immediate and accumulated over time.
I am interested in the tension between control and spontaneity. By combining translucent washes with dense texture and bold passages of color, I create paintings that suggest shifting landscapes, inner states, and fragments of experience without resolving them into a single fixed image.
Influenced by the physical process of painting itself, my practice is rooted in experimentation and discovery. I am drawn to the way paint can record movement, conceal and reveal, and hold traces of what came before.
My themes center on transformation, resonance, and the emotional language of color. I want the viewer to encounter the work not as a literal scene, but as an open space for interpretation, reflection, and feeling.
