Susan Venitelli
Artist Statement
I am a self-trained artist who draws upon my professional experience as a Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP), opera singer, and theater performer. My foray into the visual arts began with designing exercises (copywritten) designed to address child communication disorders.
Unfortunately, numerous health challenges forced me to retire from my professions, owing to chronic pain and physical debilitation. However, my illness and isolation motivated me to rediscover my passion for art. I returned to drawing and experimented with clay relief sculpture, mainly as form of therapy. Creative expression helped me heal and restored my sense of self. As a result, a theme emerged. Much of my work celebrates the majesty, mystery, and resilience of woman; exploring her various forms in differing contexts through the integration of mixed media. However, I also enjoy creating whimsical works inspired by my love of music, especially opera and jazz.
As my craft progressed, family and friends encouraged me to submit work for public display. I was excited to have four of my works recently accepted to juried exhibitions.
