Artist Statement

As a Dominican-American woman, mother, educator, and self-taught artist from the South Bronx, my work is both a reclamation and a celebration. Rooted in memory, identity, and resilience, I paint to honor the stories of my ancestors—especially the Taíno people whose presence endures in our blood, land, and spirit.

My art lives at the intersection of sacred and everyday joy. Through vibrant color, texture, and symbolic layering, I explore themes of divine femininity, ancestral connection, and emotional healing. I work primarily in mixed media, using acrylic paint, gilding, and embedded materials to create surfaces that shimmer with memory and meaning. Each piece becomes a portal—calling forward not only what was lost, but what has survived.

Laughter, light, and expressive emotion are central to my work. I see joy not as a distraction from pain, but as a sacred act of resistance and reclamation—especially for Afro-Caribbean women whose stories have often been silenced or distorted. In honoring the Taíno moon goddess, Diosa Luna, or simply portraying women caught in ecstatic expression, I am building visual altars to our power, presence, and light.

Art has been my healing ground. After loss, physical pain, and personal transformation—including major spinal surgery—I returned to my practice with deeper purpose. Painting became prayer. Teaching became testimony. Every brushstroke reminds me that I come from people who endured, who danced, who created, and who loved hard.

Through OriginalsbySteph and my signature Talindo line, I weave together heritage and contemporary vision, always with a sense of sacred joy. My work is a love letter to those who came before me—and an invitation for others to remember who they are, too.
