Joseph Foster
Artist Statement
Joseph Foster, a street photographer born in New York City in 1964. Foster’s photographs are characterized by their immediacy. He eschews posed or staged images in favor of capturing the raw and
unfiltered essence of life. My work is a pursuit of raw, unadulterated moments captured in the flux of
everyday life. As I travel the world as a street photographer, I immerse myself in
diverse cultures and urban landscapes, seeking the fleeting instances of human
connection, isolation, and the subtle narratives that unfold within the public
sphere. My approach is rooted in a deep respect for the authenticity of the
moment. I believe that the true power of street photography lies in its ability to
document reality as it is, without manipulation or embellishment.
Therefore, I consciously choose to forgo any post-processing techniques beyond
basic file management. What you see in my photographs is precisely what my lens
witnessed: the natural light, the spontaneous composition, the raw emotion etched
on a passerby’s face. This commitment to in-camera capture is not a technical
limitation, but a deliberate artistic choice. It allows me to maintain the integrity of
the moment, preserving its immediacy and visceral impact. I aim to present the
world as I experienced it, inviting viewers to connect with the subjects on a purely
human level.
My travels are not simply about documenting different places; they are about
exploring the universal human experience through the lens of specific cultural
contexts. From the bustling markets of the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona to the
quiet backstreets of Tokyo ( we are going in April ), I seek out the common
threads that bind us together as a species. My photographs are not staged or
contrived; they are fragments of reality, frozen in time, offering a glimpse into the
shared tapestry of human existence. They are a testament to the beauty and
complexity of the world around us, captured in its most honest and unfiltered
form.
