Artist Statement

I am a lifelong observer. I look, and then I look deeper. I am drawn to capturing both moments of peace and melancholy and my process involves exploring the parallels and the details between the two spheres. I am a realist who uses my background scrutinizing biological methodologies and the details we encounter in daily life and then poignantly recreating them with oil paint and a brush. Our environment is a combination of our own still lifes and human interactions. I am influenced by the solace of those still lifes, the monotony of a routine that soothes, or the unexpected serendipity of a human connection. Truly observing situational moments like these have always been fascinating and deeply reflective to me. Common daily occurrences from the act of living such as a quiet moment having coffee, riding a bus, or a gazing at the sea evoke shared emotions and transcend cultures, and I attempt to portray them and pause them with oil paint. I trust my extensive years of scientific observation to capture and emphasize details in our daily human experiences -however mundane and overlooked- and then I attempt to highlight them on a two dimensional canvas, elevating them into something deeper, something more profound, creating a moment of nostalgia, compassion or reflection.
