Artist Statement
My drawings, collages, paintings, and monoprints follow ideas with intuitive and spontaneous processes, using discoveries from each medium to inform my learning and approaches to the others. My subject matter is informed by life and travels across the Western hemisphere -- plains and mountains of the Midwest and Southwest, tropics of Central America, and geographies and wildlife of the Northwest, as well as my recent years of living in the Northeast.
Much of my subject matter is informed by and infused with ethnological and geographical phenomena and the impact of human activities, with an appreciative eye on art's histories and the inspirations that other modern and contemporary artists have afforded me.
Most imagery in my work is from memory, subjected to personal expression through abstract forms. I usually do not work from sketches and photographs, but prefer to directly engage and experiment with the medium on the substrate without reliance on digital technology. This is because I find that direct physical engagement with materials, much as in my past in dance and performance lives, is the most satisfying and humanizing approach for me.
