Artist Statement

I’ve painted all my life, but my father was an ad man and the illustrators’ annuals and magazines he brought home influenced my style. I was trained in watercolor and transparent acrylics in college and those mediums suit my desire for accurate depiction combined with the fluid, natural effects of water. But my impatience, and an obsession with line stemming from my design background, often drives me to use the brush like a pencil and incorporate thread, ribbon and other textures into my work.
My inspiration for subject matter often comes from a fusion of two passions—creativity and protecting the natural world. Through years of environmental activism my message has almost always centered on the awe-inspiring wonders of nature. "Wildness Is Necessity" was inspired by the constant and caffeinated stress of my ad agency job. John Muir got it right--get to the mountains. Or beach. Quickly.
