Artist Statement

Using a unique watercolor process, I layer transparent watercolor and gouache over graphite to achieve luminous, richly saturated works on paper. Although watercolor is traditionally associated with looseness and spontaneity, I approach it with the same control and precision the Photorealists applied to oil and acrylic. Like them, I use photographs as a starting point to render the details that cannot be seen with the unaided eye. I reinterpret these images, however, through the softness and transparency that watercolor uniquely offers. This balance—between tight control and the medium’s natural fluidity—is what fascinates and motivates me.
