Artist Statement

Daniel Murray

I was born in NYC and grew up in Connecticut. At 18, I received a Congressional appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and so sailed throughout the world on merchant ships. During this period, I began studying art in Italy. I later attended the University of Connecticut School of Fine Arts, graduating with a degree in Painting and Sculpture.

After graduation, I moved to NYC and continued my studies at The School of Visual Arts and also I began an acting career. I was a active member of the Screen Actors Guild for 17 years. Working with remarkable actors, teachers and playwrights, this time gave me a valuable appreciation of the human condition.

I moved to Kent, CT in 1991. At my first show, "Quiet Confrontations", a show of oil portraits, I met esteemed master sculptor, Paul Suttman. Paul became a valued friend and mentor, inviting me to study classical investment bronze technique with him at his studios. Sadly, he died suddenly of a massive heart attack at the age of 59. I was his last assistant and it was a very profound experience for me. The knowledge gained then set the groundwork for my sculpture today.

My wife, Alina Hernandez, and I live deep in the Kent woods. There I sculpt and paint. Most often I sculpt animal forms. Hawks and mountain lions, for example, have evolved to become top predators in their worlds and possess remarkable grace and strength with wonderful form and movement. Our dogs have inspired me, they are a connection to nature that grounds me and gives insight to our greater world.
