Artist Statement
The Bed Assemblage works arise from a process shaped as much by contingency and accident as by intention. I reimagine the bed as an elemental threshold of human life, a site of dreaming, intimacy, vulnerability, illness, rest, and departure. It is where we are most fragile, yet paradoxically, where we are also given space to evolve, to heal, and to transform. By using the bedframe as a structural and metaphorical armature, I explore how materials accumulate an emotional charge evoking a sense of loss, transformation, and aura of mystery and sadness to the abandoned objects that permeate the sculpture. While not literal self-portraits, these works are inherently autobiographical. They reflect the environment, histories, and found materials that have shaped my life from my surroundings in upstate New York, while remaining open to shared experiences of shelter, conflict, transition, and survival and the unstable spaces between presence and loss finding expression in the fragile poetics of ruin and renewal.
