Artist Statement

These mixed media paintings on stretched canvas are part of my abstract series. I love to play with color, shapes, and lines with an ordered spontaneity that emphasizes a kind of playfulness with pattern and repetition. I begin each painting with a loose line drawing to establish a rough composition and division of space. Then I choose my color palette and lay down areas of color making sure the values contrast. The next step is to find paper( handmade or found) and fabrics that coordinate with the painted shapes giving the piece pattern and texture. The process grows with each layer of paint and collage until I am satisfied that it has all the elements in harmony. I like to explore the tension between structure and spontaneity, all the while aiming for a joyful and spirited composition.
