Artist Statement
Bringing words to life, evoking imagery with text, creating a mood from a single thought; these are what I strive for in each work of art. I’m endlessly inspired by nature, and how thoroughly connected it is to our lives. Shapes, colors, designs, and images weave through our languages, and my goal is to interpret and bring the elements together. I’m largely self-taught, with only a few workshops taken that have guided me through my career.
I primarily work on calfskin or goatskin parchment, which seems like a natural choice. Several years ago I attended a workshop in NY to learn how parchment is made, which only adds to the exquisiteness of the material upon understanding the laborious process. The methods have not changed much over the centuries, resulting in a velvety substrate that is magical when applying watercolor and gold leaf.
The majority of my work is small to miniature, with miniaturism being my specialty.
