Artist Statement

statement - Being that I am a ONE PERSON STUDIO, I first decide what the goal of the finished product is to be; casual, formal, large or small, then I visualize who and how this piece will be used. Once I have the vision, it is time to create the tools that will allow me to create the art. I first create paper patterns that I know will combine together to a perfect fit in the finished product. Once I am satisfied with these, I use them to create my cookie cutter dies by tracing patterns onto plywood and jigsaw cut the pieces out, these are then used to hand cut the leather. The process of selecting from the hundreds of unique leathers, in making this one piece all that it can be, is most enjoyable. I go through the process of, mixing and matching colors, textures, embossing, and the feel until I find the perfect combination. I am pleased that I am able to acquire leathers which are limited or one of a kind prints and colors, by being fortunate enough to purchase repurposed leathers from larger manufacturers, truly making each piece a "One of a Kind". To add to this uniqueness I have now researched and studied on the art of marbling and painting on my leathers to add another dimension to my work. From this point I carefully cut, glue-tack, sew each style using a variety of stitching techniques such as; applique,stitch'n'ditch, binding, welting, pin-tucking to name a few, then I rivet the individual pieces to completion, with this all being done in a carefully choreographed process so that the finished product is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Each piece is made using 100% leather which includes all pockets and liners not visible in photos. I take great pride in my craftsmanship to ensure the integrity and durability of each art piece. I realize this piece is not only for the purchaser, but will be appreciated by the public for years to come.
