Woman Made Gallery (WMG) invites women and nonbinary artists to submit work for “Unravelled”, an exhibition exploring contemporary fiber + textile based practices.
Fiber + textile art forms have deep cultural and social roots. Long associated with domestic labor, craft, and “women’s work”, fiber + textile practices continue to serve as repositories of knowledge, identity, self expression, personal histories, and sustain communities. Today, artists continue to draw upon these rich histories while expanding the possibilities of the medium through innovation, experimentation, and interdisciplinary practices.
For nearly 35 years, Woman Made Gallery has fostered an intergenerational community of women and non-binary artists. We continue to work and improve upon our mission to create space for artists at all stages in their career to exhibit, connect, and learn from one another. This culture of exchange and shared knowledge makes WMG an especially meaningful site for “Unravelled”, presenting a unique opportunity to exhibit practices that engage with both the preservation and reinvention of fiber + textile tradition, together.
“Unravelled” examines fiber + textiles and their capabilities as vessels for memory, inheritance, culture, resistance, and more. This exhibition invites dialogue around materiality, labor, memory, gender, construction, the relationship between art and craft, body and object, preservation and transformation, tradition and innovation. Whether you are a student of tradition, working to preserve inherited techniques, pursuing new materials and technologies, or creating unexpected intersections, participating artists will demonstrate the unique range of the medium.
Submissions are open to women and nonbinary artists at all career stages. Artists working in fiber + textiles (inclusive of traditional and experimental uses of the medium) are welcome to apply.
Submitted work must be original, created by the artist, and produced without the primary use of AI image-generation tools.
Artworks must incorporate fiber based materials and/or strategies at some stage in the making process. Including but not limited to the following: sewing, quilting, weaving, crochet, embroidery, tapestry, lace-making, natural dyeing, beadwork, wearable work, felting, knitting, knotting, soft sculpture, and expanded fiber practices.
Note: The gallery is unable to provide mannequins or stands for wearable pieces.
WMG offers a number of reduced entry fees and fee waivers reserved for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ artists. In support of our mission to support the practices of historically under-represented artists and because we never want financial position to be an obstacle of participation, artists may submit their requests to us at [email protected] with the subject "Fee Waiver".
