What does it mean to build within systems that are already alive? What forms of intelligence move through water, soil, biological networks, and data? How are we already prototyping the futures we inhabit?

Prototyping Futures of Making brings together artists whose practices engage water, data, and living systems as sites of construction, relation, and consequence. At a moment when AI/Data Infrastructures depend on vast quantities of water and land, this exhibition asks what it means to build within systems that are already alive. Trees transmit through root and fungal networks, rivers carry memory and contamination, and natural systems register signals that exceed human language, while computational systems abstract, store, and intensify data, intelligence, and flows of operation.

Drawing from contemporary developments in material ecology and interdisciplinary design, including frameworks advanced by Neri Oxman and curatorial perspectives shaped by Paola Antonelli at the Museum of Modern Art, the exhibition foregrounds practices that move beyond fabrication toward growth, co-production, and interspecies collaboration.

These questions are reflected in the practice of our 2027 juror, Lisa B. Woods, whose work moves across art, technology, ecological systems, and interdisciplinary research. We are pleased to welcome her as juror for Prototyping Futures of Making: Water, Data, and Living Systems.

The Jurors will prioritize work that closely addresses issues and solutions on this topic.
