Humankind has counted approximately 200,000 to 400,000 different species of flowering plants, from daisies to orchids to Venus flytraps. And throughout our history, we have been captivated by their magic, natural colors, and symmetry. Plants and flowers in art can communicate a range of emotions, secret meanings, symbols of femininity. They may serve as a bold, maximalist background for the artist's subject, or simply depict the glory of nature. The Women's Caucus for Art of Greater Washington, DC (WCADC) invites women artists based in DC, Maryland, or Virginia to submit botanical and floral-focused work for 'Flora'. Depictions of plants and flowers in abstract art, representational portraits, photography, sculpture, and mixed media pieces are all welcome and acceptable.

ELIGIBILITY
Women and non-binary artists based in DC, Maryland, or Virginia are eligible to submit.

CATEGORIES ACCEPTED
Painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, hangable assemblage, collage, mixed media, fiber art, and sculpture.

This exhibition cannot accept jewelry, video, film, performance art, or works requiring an external electrical source and installation.

NON-REFUNDABLE ENTRY FEE
Payment of $25 for Women's Caucus for Art members and $35 for non-members per entry. An entry consists of one to three pieces / images per submission. Credit card payment through PayPal only. WHY IS THERE A FEE?
A portion of all entry fees for this exhibition will be donated to WCADC's Visual Arts Scholarship which recognizes artistic excellence among 12th grade Black, Indigenous, Persons of Color (BIPOC) young women enrolled in a high school within the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia. ARTWORK MAXIMUM SIZE
2-Dimensional / Hangable artwork: including its frame, artwork must be no larger than 72 inches (6 feet) in any direction and weigh no more than 40 pounds.

3-Dimensional Work: no larger than 20 inches at the base.

ARTWORK PRESENTATION
Artwork must arrive exhibition-ready. Hangable art should be ready to hang with wire, D-rings or screw eyes, matted and framed, or with edges finished. Sawtooth frame hangers are unacceptable.

3-Dimensional artwork that is to be displayed on a pedestal or floor must be stable and pose no risk of falling over.

Situated inside Smallwood State Park at the scenic mouth of Mattawoman Creek, the art center is dedicated to cultivating the creation, appreciation, and availability of visual fine arts in Southern Maryland.

JUROR: Sharon J. Burton is an artist, curator, poet, and certified creativity coach and soon to be author. Sharon received her certification in creativity coaching from the Creativity Coaching Association and is the Founder of Spark Your Creative Coaching, where she hosts a podcast that focuses on helping artists, writers, and creatives reach their creative potential and create mindful communities. As a mixed media/collage visual artist who has exhibited in galleries, art venues, and other settings across the country since 2007, Sharon has also served as a teaching artist for arts organizations including Artomatic, Art Works Now, Del Ray Artisans, and Moonlit DC. She completed requirements for the professional certificate in Art Business from New York University and a certificate in Art History through the Smithsonian. Other educational credentials include an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and a graduate degree in Public Administration. Sharon will release her first book of creativity tips for artists, writers, and other creatives at midlife in 2024.

IMAGE SPECIFICATIONS
Each JPG/PNG image file must be named with the artist's first_lastname_title (example: Vincent_Vangogh_Starrynight.jpg). Image file should not be larger than 5MB and 1400px wide. Images should be clear, good quality, and taken without frames or additional text added.

NOTIFICATION TO ARTISTS
May 18, 2024. All artists who have submitted artwork will be notified by email. The email will come from [email protected] with a follow up email from the WCADC Exhibitions Committee. You will receive notification even if no artwork has been selected. If you do not receive notice, please check your email spam or trash folder and contact WCADC.

HAND-DELIVER ARTWORK
Artwork must be hand-delivered on Saturday, June 1 or Sunday, June 2. Shipped artwork is not accepted for this exhibition.

PICK-UP ARTWORK
Sunday, July 7 and Monday, July 8, 1 pm to 4 pm each day. Artwork must be retrieved during the allotted days and times.

INSURANCE AND LIABILITY
Artists are expected to carry sufficient insurance to cover loss or damage to the artwork(s) while they are on the premises of the Mattawoman Creek Art Center. The MCAC nor WCADC shall be responsible for loss or damage.

SALE OF ART
75% of a sale will go to the artist, 25% of a sale will go to Mattawoman Creek Arts Center. Items sold must remain on exhibit for the duration of the show.
