OPEN CALL FOR ENTRIES
Be There is the theme for ELEVEN, Viewpoint’s end of the year juried exhibition. When street and news photographer Arthur Fellig, who was better known by his pseudonym, Weegee, was asked for the secret of his success, he is said to have replied, “F8 and be there.” Part of the reward for photographers is the experience of making photographs that are the result of preparation, seeking, opportunity, and actually being there. This is true whether the photo is of a child’s first step, part of a travelogue, an amazing dig for a tennis return, light thrown by the skyscraper’s windows, a still life that was the just right arrangement and clarity, or the quietude implied by new snow. The photograph holds the memory of being there and then transforms, becoming an invitation to share the experience with viewers. Viewpoint Photographic Art Center welcomes your concepts, conclusions, creativity and craftsmanship as you connect with the theme Be There for the annual ELEVEN juried exhibit. We hope you accept the challenge to BE THERE!

ABOUT THE JUROR
Jeff Redman founded and operated Lightwork: a photographers’ supply and gallery in Sacramento from 1980-1997. He curated exhibits in the Lightwork Gallery for Linda McCartney, Ruth Bernhard, Roy DeCarava, Oliver Gagliani, Morley Baer, Carlton Watkins, Gordon Hutchings, Michael Williamson, Charles Moore, Mary Swisher, Gerry Storey, Ralph Talbert, Roger Vail, Richard Goldwach, and dozens of others. In 1991 with the support of other charter members, Redman founded Viewpoint Photographic Art Center. While a student at Sacramento State he studied with Ralph Talbert and Nick DeLucia and worked as a photojournalist for the Hornet. Assignments with the Hornet included newsworthy speeches by Martin Luther King, Jr., Stokley Carmichael, Angela Davis, and Ronald Reagan and performances by Country Joe and the Fish, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Arlo Guthrie, The Moody Blues, and others. Redman has taught courses in beginning photography, the zone system and Photoshop at local colleges. Ever inquisitive, during Covid he learned carbon printing directly from Vaughn Hutchins. Redman continues to support Viewpoint with his expertise, experience and broad knowledge of photography.
