Artists are invited to interpret the theme 'No Boundaries' in an original piece of fiber-based artwork. Boundaries can keep things in or keep things out. They may be physical, geographical, or even emotional. This exhibition asks artists to explore the creation of art with 'No Boundaries.' Artwork will be considered in any media but MUST contain a minimum of 25% fiber components or fiber techniques. Entries will be accepted from January 15 - May 15, 2023. Each piece should be accompanied by a brief artist/process statement of up to 150 words.
Juror, Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, is the founder of the African-American Quilt Guild of Los Angeles and the Women of Color Quilters Network. Mazloomi is at the forefront of educating the public about the diversity of interpretations, styles, and techniques among African American quilters. A major force as an artist in her own right, Dr. Mazloomi's quilts have been exhibited extensively in venues such as the Mint Museum, the American Folk Art Museum in New York City, the National Civil Rights Museum, Museum of Art and Design, and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. She has curated 21 extensive exhibits of quilts made by members of the Women of Color Quilters Network, many of them traveling exhibits. Dr. Mazloomi has been the recipient of many honors including the 2003 Ohio Heritage Fellowship Award, the National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2014, the 2016 inductee to the Quilters Hall of Fame Museum, and the 2022 Honorary Fellow of the American Craft Council.
- Entry is open to the general public.
- Museum membership is not required but the entry fee is discounted for members of the Virginia Quilt Museum.
- The non-refundable fee for entering up to three (3) works is $35 for VQM members and $45 for non-members.
One (1) additional work may be submitted for $10 extra.
- Artwork submitted for consideration must not have been exhibited at the Virginia Quilt Museum previously.
- Artwork for sale is encouraged, however, not-for-sale works may be entered.
