Nature VS Nurture

Organization: The Art Center Highland Park Location 1957 Sheridan Road, Highland Park, Illinois 60035 Entry Fee Paid Entry Deadline May 23, 2022 Exhibition Jun 17 - Jul 30, 2022
The Art Center Highland Park is going to wade into the age-old debate:
Nature VS Nurture - Or is it Nature PLUS Nurture, Nature TIMES Nurture?

As a starting point for this upcoming exhibit, curator Caren Helene Rudman derived from the writing, 'The Age Old Debate of Nature vs. Nurture' by Kendra Cherry:
Nature refers to all of the genes and hereditary factors that influence who we are from our physical appearance to our personality characteristics.
Nurture refers to all the environmental variables that impact who we are, including our early childhood experiences, how we were raised, our social relationships, and our surrounding culture.

The Art Center invites artists? work that explores the interaction between inherited traits and environmental affects. Artists may share their influences and/or stories that show how their own family connects in terms of their art practices within the work, or in their written statements.

Inspired by the the concurrent exhibition in the Main Gallery, 'famil-E', with featured artists/guest jurors Sheila, Joyce and Joshua Elias. This exhibit will be the first time Sheila, (parent) will be exhibiting with her adult children (Joshua and Joyce) highlighting the question of whether artistic ability is genetically inherited or are the interests and passions developed through behavioral modeling and exposure within the familial environment.

In the context of this exhibit a wide interpretation of the theme will expand from the context of human beings, to the exploration of environmental factors on our planet and how we may or may not influence the ?nature? of things. In other words, does behavior affect the ?natural? order and if so how? Do we have a choice? Is anything ?original?? Is art born from inspiration, education, dedication, influence, intuition . . . or are we just born with the need to create?

Guest jurors: Sheila Elias, Joshua Elias, Joyce Elias
