THE BLACK EXPERIENCE
January 16 – February 19, 2027
Entries Due: November 28, 2026
In honor of Black History Month, Tall Grass Gallery invites African American artists to submit entries for this first exhibit of 2027.
Works may be in any media or style and can share images or interpretations of the artists’ lives, personal experiences, lessons, influences, challenges, fears, struggles, victories.
CONSIDER:
> Negative and positive events, the quality of daily lives, injustices, rewards, actions taken, decisions made, the people who inspired, histories of lost hope, long-held dreams for the future.
> Images of people who made a difference for others, texts of important speeches or writings, situations of changes in conditions, struggles to make those changes, progress, and lives affected.
> Works that refer to events, relationships, talents, gifts, other art forms that educate, document, inspire.
> All sizes, styles and formats will be accepted for consideration.
> Any medium (except video) is acceptable:
* painting (oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, etc.)
* drawing (pencil, ink, charcoal, scratchboard, etc.)
* printmaking (linocut, etching, engraving, silkscreen, etc.)
* photography * digital works * graphic design
* mixed media; collage * calligraphy * books
* sculpture (3D, relief, installation, etc.)
* fiber * glass * ceramics * metal
> Various traditional criteria will be considered in choosing works for the show - compositional elements, use of media, technical skill, etc. as well as each artist's unique vision and choices made, and the impact and lasting impression of the piece.
For this particular show, we might expect some works to be educational, informing us of events or lessons, struggles and successes, that Black Americans have experienced, and the power of a work’s message will also be considered.
Curators for the show will be Claudia Craemer and Deb Craemer, and joining them for selections of works for the exhibit wlll be two highly respected artists, photographer Perry Slade and painter Eurnice Harris.
Works will not be judged for awards for this show, but votes will be collected from visitors for most outstanding pieces.
