Breathe: Protections, Paradigms, and Pandemic

Organization: The Shenandoah Valley Art Center Location Waynesboro, Virginia Entry Fee Paid Entry Deadline October 23, 2020 Exhibition Dec 1 - Jan 23, 2021
Breathe: Protections, Paradigms, Pandemic

Shenandoah Valley Art Center is seeking artists of all mediums and genres to apply for its annual contemporary exhibit.

This year's exhibit is: Breathe: Protections, Paradigms, Pandemic. This show aims to encourage discourse about face masks and face coverings during 2020, especially how quickly our culture shifts in times of turbulence and uncertainty. In many ways, the year 2020 has challenged our assumptions about our freedom to breathe. Consider the phrase "I can't breathe." Does it mean the same thing to a person persecuted for the color of the skin, as it does to someone battling an incurable virus attacking their lungs? What does it mean to those of us tasked with watching our loved ones suffer under those different circumstances?

Are masks a sign of oppression (gas masks worn on a battlefield or by law enforcement officers, for example,) or a sign of love and courtesy (like a cloth mask sewn by a mother for her child?) What emotions are evoked when you consider how you felt about masks last year, compared to how you feel about them now?

As we continue to navigate the new and complex landscape of COVID-19, we find ourselves faced with quickly changing cultural and social norms. Prior to the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, face masks and face coverings carried certain connotations. Masked figures have been associated with crime, vigilantism, and the immunosuppressed. Wearing a mask is still illegal in many states. And yet almost overnight, our expectations and feelings around masks were challenged.

Although all artwork pertaining to this global crisis will be considered, we strongly encourage artists to apply with pieces that explore themes around masks and mask wearing. We encourage all mediums, with special consideration for film, photography, sculpture, fiber arts, and interactive media.

This show will include an online exhibition as well as gallery exhibit. There will be a print catalog included.

Artists are responsible for dropping off or shipping works to SVAC. Prepaid return shipping labels must be included with shipped work. All pieces must be received by December 1. We are not responsible for damage to work during shipping. We will report any damage to you upon receipt. Works will be repacked in the same materials you used for return shipping.

SVAC takes a 20% commission on all works sold. Sales tax is the responsibility of the artist- we do not collect tax from patrons.

We reserve the right to use your images in all publicity and marketing materials pertaining to this show, as well as general Art Center materials (you will be credited).
