This is a multimedia juried exhibit with cash prizes. We are asking artists across disciplines and experience levels to submit up to 9 pieces of artwork on the theme of all things MARINE: the sea, the seashore, boats, activity on or near the water, etc. The exhibit is named after Vivian and Stanley Reed, two founding members of SAA and avid sailors.
This years co-jurors are Debapriya Sarkar and Michael Bagley.
Debapriya Sarkar is Associate Professor of English and Maritime Studies at the University of Connecticut. At Stamford, she teaches courses on Shakespeare, early modern literature and culture, oceanic and maritime literature, environmental humanities, and science studies. She is the author of Possible Knowledge: The Literary Forms of Early Modern Science (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2023) and has published articles on environmental humanities and maritime studies in several journals and edited collections. She is the project lead (with Dr. Hillary Eklund) on an interdisciplinary public humanities project, Waterways, that aims to foster community-driven, place-based, and historically informed initiatives on environmental studies, centered on bodies of water and the lives they connect and sustain.
Michael Bagley is the Vice President of Programs for SoundWaters, a Stamford-based nonprofit education organization that offers programs and experiences centered on Long Island Sound and the marine environment. In that role he oversees all programs for young people and adults on both land and sea. Mike is a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed mariner and serves as one of the captains of the 80’ Schooner SoundWaters, which provides educational and recreational sails for schools and the general public.
Mike is also an award-winning photographer, and has been creating with his camera for three decades. Mike’s work includes on-the-water sail racing photography, seascape images, and commercial images for several companies. He has a special interest in creating portraits of adoptable animals to help them find homes.
