'A Woman's Voice In A Pivotal Time' - Exhibition and Catalog - We invite artists to delve into the rich tapestry of women's experiences and voices during today's pivotal times. We seek to inspire artists to explore and amplify the voices of women fostering dialogue, reflection and empowerment through artistic expressions.
'A Woman's Voice In A Pivotal Time' will be juried by Kim Abeles. Abeles explores society, science literacy, feminism, and the environment, creating projects with science and natural history museums, health departments, air pollution control agencies, and National Park Service. NEA projects involved her residency at the Institute of Forest Genetics; and Valises in collaboration with Camp 13, a group of female prison inmates who fight wildfires. Abeles is a Guggenheim Fellow, and her work is in numerous collections including MOCA, LACMA, Berkeley Art Museum, and California African American Museum. Her public art includes Citizen Seeds along the Park to Playa Trail, and Walk a Mile in My Shoes, based on the shoes of Civil Rights marchers and local activists.
Artists are encouraged to explore a wide range of themes and genre related to women's experiences in pivotal times, including but not limited to:
Personal Narratives: Presenting intimate and personal stories of women navigating significant moments in their lives: empowerment, adversity, resilience, or self-discovery.
Social & Political Movements: Depicting women's participation and leadership in social, political, and cultural movements for change.
Intersectionality: Addressing the intersecting identities and experiences of women, exploring how these intersecting factors shape their experiences during pivotal times.
Representation and Visibility: Examining issues of representation, visibility, and portrayal of women in art, media, and society, and challenging stereotypes, biases, and narratives that marginalize or silence women's voices.
Open to all self-identified women artists in Southern California working in most media except video, installation and performance.
