2018 Kensington Paint the Town Labor Day Show

MAA Membership is required for show participation. $50 Membership fees for 2018-2019 will be automatically added to show registration entry fees.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS


• The show is open to local (Maryland/Virginia/DC) artists 18 years old and over, either new or renewing MAA members

• One work must be based on a subject within Kensington--the 20895 zip code.

• Only original works of art will be accepted. No wet canvases.

• Artwork to be securely labeled (on the back top right) identifying the Artist, Title, Medium, Price, and Category. Must be wired to hang (sawtooth hangers not accepted).

• Large work maximum is 36 inches wide and 30 inches height (including frame).

• Works larger than 20 inches x 28 inches that require glazing must use plexi-glass.

• Work should be current and completed within the last two years. Do not enter work that has been exhibited in any previously judged MAA Show.

• The hand of the artist must be visible and dominant in the construction of the artwork even when digital tools are used. Digital art is to be numbered as a limited edition.

• Photography is not accepted.

• Tastefully done nudes are accepted (no explicit views)

The judge and/or show committee reserves the right to reject inappropriate or improperly framed work. Artwork is hung on a first come first serve basis and on a space available basis. Works not meeting the guidelines will not be hung.

REGISTRATION, ENTRY FEES, DUES PAYMENT, AND SHOW DETAILS


• All registrations must be completed online at www.MontgomeryArt.org. No handwritten or late entries accepted. No images required.


• Registration: Open Monday, July 9 through Saturday, August 11. Entries must be received by DEADLINE of midnight Saturday, August 11. No exceptions.


• Entry Fees: MAA Members: $15. Includes the Kensington entry and one additional entry. Additional works are $6 each. Limit of 4 entries per artist total (Kensington piece plus 3 others maximum).
MAA Membership Dues for 2018-2019 of $50 will be added in addition to the total cost for the entry fees.

If not paying online, mail check to MAA c/o John Macarthur, 5305 Musket Court, Rockville, MD 20853. Due by August 11.


• Membership Dues: $50 for 2018-19 for new and renewing members. $25 for student members. ($50 dues are added automatically to the entry fees for the registration as membership is required to enter the show).

By submitting an entry, registrants agree with the following: I am paying all fees and certify that I agree to the rules of the show as presented here. Entries submitted are my own work. I will not hold MAA or the Town of Kensington responsible for any loss or damage to my artwork while on the property. MAA reserves the right to reject inappropriate or improperly framed work.


• Subject Categories: Kensington (one mandatory), Landscape, Portrait (People and Animals), Still Life, Abstract, and 3D.

Use the description field to indicate the category (Kensington, Landscape, Portrait (People and Animals), Still Life, Abstract, or 3D) for your submission.

• Awards: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention are given for each category. The first prize winner in the Kensington Category receives the Bertha Clum Grand Prize Award. The awards are cash prizes, gift certificates and other prizes made possible through the generous donations of merchants and businesses, and the Town of Kensington.


• Bin Work and Card Sales: MAA members exhibiting in the main show may exhibit their bin work and art cards. MAA will provide a limited number of shared bins and card racks. If you have more than five pieces, you must bring your own bin. Bins must be the standard black canvas in presentable shape. Bins will be arranged on the floor by the show staff. No framed pieces are allowed in the MAA shared bins. Artwork in bins must be presented in plastic sleeves and matted where possible and pre-labeled with the artist's name, title, medium, and price.

SHOW OPERATIONS


• Hours: Saturday-Sunday, Sept 1-2, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Monday, September 3, 9:30 to 5:30 PM


• Awards Reception: Saturday, Sept 1, 6:00 to 8:00 PM


• Delivery Dates: Thurs., August 30, 4:00 to 7:00 PM or
Fri., August 31, 9 AM to 11 AM


• Judging will begin promptly at 11 am on Friday, 8/31. Late entries are not accepted for judging due to schedule.


• Judge: Gavin Glakas will be the judge for the show. He studied at Washington University in St. Louis and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He has won numerous honors for his artwork and his paintings have been featured on NBC News and in the Washington Post as well as numerous art-related publications. His paintings are in the permanent collections of the US Senate, the House of Representatives, and the Virginia State Capital. He teaches painting and drawing at the Yellow Barn Studio and is represented by Principle Gallery of Alexandria, VA and Charleston, SC

• Show Set-up: Thursday, August 30, 11:00 - 3:00 pm

• Show Hanging: Fri, Aug 31, 1:00 - 5:00 pm

• Pick up Date for Unsold Art: Monday, 9/3, 5:30 to 7:30 PM or Tuesday, Sept. 4; 9:00 to 11 am.


• Volunteer Task Signup: All artists entering this show must volunteer to assist with the operation of the show in some capacity such as greeters, cashiers, show hanging, soliciting donations, signs set-up, show set-up or take down, cleanup, etc.

Go to http://VolunteerSignup.org/LDQH7. Review the list of tasks and click sign up next to the task selected. You may sign up before, during, or after your registration but you MUST help in some way. Please contact the show chair for volunteer duties ahead if not able to help during the show.


• Sales: MAA will process all sales, collect 6% Maryland sales tax, and take a 25% commission from each sold piece. Works that sell are not to be removed until the end of the show, Monday, Sept 3.

Security: Reasonable care will be taken by MAA and its show volunteers. Neither volunteers, MAA, nor the Town of Kensington will be responsible for loss or damage to artwork on the property. See artist agreement under Registration.
