CONCEAL/REVEAL: EXHIBITION IN PRINT 2014
The Metal Arts Guild of Canada invites all members of the Guild to submit their recent and current work to our 2014 biennial exhibition, Conceal/Reveal: Metal Arts Guild of Canada Exhibition in Print 2014.
Illusion is the tradecraft of actors, magicians, politicians and yes, even metalsmiths. Whether to elicit a sense of wonder in the viewer, enhance the status of the wearer, or for spiritual or political purpose, jewellery and metal art have embraced illusion for millennia, as a concept and a practice.
The Metal Art Guild of Canada’s second curated Exhibition In Print seeks high quality images of your most illusory work. Optic or metaphoric, magical and theatrical, if it’s not quite what it seems, we want to see it.
Works should be photographed in a manner that conveys the way in which the work is initially perceived, and “the reveal” that exposes the work’s true identity or meaning. The illusion should be evident in the work rather than as a result of digital manipulation of the images.

MAGC's biennial exhibition will be a print and digital experience. Conceal/Reveal will take over the Fall issue of MAGazine, and will be showcased on the MAGC website. Rather than a physical exhibit available in one geographic location for a limited time, Conceal/Reveal will be seen and experienced simultaneously by Guild members across the country — Shazam!
ABOUT THE CURATOR
The exhibition will be curated by Ken Vickerson, a leading Canadian metalsmith and educator.
Mr. Vickerson is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Design and Chair of Material Arts and Design at OCAD University. He graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 1982, and in 1985 established a custom goldsmithing practice in Toronto. He has exhibited widely, including shows in Europe, Asia, America and Canada.
Mr. Vickerson's work has been featured on the cover of Metalsmith Magazine, and his critical writing has been published in numerous journals and magazines. Ken was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts in 2003.
IMPORTANT DATES
• Submission deadline: 31 October 2014
• Notification (by email): 28 October 2014
• High resolution .jpgs of accepted work (see Information Requirements, below) submitted to Editor: 4 November 2014
• Exhibition in Print 2014 published: December 2014
ELIGIBILITY
• Open to all jewellers, designers, and metal artists, including post-secondary students
• Applicants need not reside in Canada, but must be Silver, Gold or Platinum members of MAGC
• All work must be original and produced anytime after 1 January 2011
• Work may involve other materials, but the predominating material must be metal
• Objects made from commercial kits or commercially available plans are NOT ELIGIBLE
• Applicants may submit up to 3 pieces. Each piece must be submitted as a separate entry
• Applicants are encouraged to submit work that has not been widely published in print or online
