We are excited to announce an opportunity for artists to explore the theme of 'Metamorphosis' in an upcoming exhibition at Mercury 20 Gallery in Oakland, CA. Metamorphosis, a powerful and transformative process, serves as the central inspiration for this call. We invite artists to submit their work.
Metamorphosis dwells in the place of change, growth, and evolution. It represents the profound transformation that occurs within and around us, be it physical, emotional, or spiritual. In addition, the pandemic caused many people to dramatically reassess and change their lives, to experience a variety of metamorphoses. What takes us, alchemically, from one state of being to another? Artists are encouraged to interpret this theme broadly and in their own distinctive ways, using a variety of artistic mediums including but not limited to painting, sculpture, collage, photography, and mixed media.
About the Juror:
Elena Gross (she/they) is the Co-Executive Director of the Berkeley Art Center and an independent writer and culture critic living in Oakland, CA. She specializes in representations of identity in fine art, photography, and popular media. Her research has been centered around conceptual and material abstractions of the body in the work of Black modern and contemporary artists and most recently in queer artistic and literary histories of the late 20th century. Elena is the co-editor, along with Julie R. Enszer, of OutWrite: The Speeches that Shaped LGBTQ Culture (Rutgers University Press), winner of the 2023 Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ Anthologies.
An artist statement relating to the theme must be included in your submission.
We look forward to receiving your thought-provoking interpretations of the Metamorphosis theme.
