OUR DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED!!!!
While limitations are often considered negative or restrictive to daily life or artistic production, they have the potential to enhance both if embraced as a strength, as opposed to a weakness. Restraints compel us to respond to adverse situations in creative and unorthodox ways, with results that can be markedly complex and nuanced.
Many contemporary artists have appreciated these limitations over the years and produced significant bodies of work in response: the loss of a studio or the daily realities of a small, starter apartment may yield poignant work on a small scale; the birth of a child results in a manageable, daily drawing practice; the use of one material exploited to its full potential evolves into an all-encompassing large-scale installation; or, experimentation with an accessible, less costly paint produces a rich study in the versatility of its properties.
“Relishing Restraint” will explore how contemporary artists working today have embraced limitations imposed by space, finances, materials, identity, time (or otherwise) to enhance or transform their practice for the better.
Juror / Curator: Krista Scenna is an independent curator and gallerist based in Brooklyn, NY. She earned her undergraduate degree in Art History & Spanish from the University of Pennsylvania and a graduate degree in interdisciplinary contemporary art from New York University’s Draper Program. Scenna has worked for the ICA in Philadelphia, the Queens Museum, the Whitney Museum of Art and New Museum of Contemporary Art in various capacities. As the co-owner of Ground Floor Gallery in Brooklyn, Scenna connects emerging artists with new art buyers. She is also a proud
member of the Association of Women Art Dealers (AWAD) and serves on the board of Arts Gowanus and the advisory committees of the Brooklyn Arts Council and the New York City Department of Transportation. She is thrilled to be working with the LAA as our 2018 guest curator.
