Call for Artists: Freedom of the Press Landmark Mural (KMXT-Kodiak, Alaska)
KMXT Public Radio is seeking an artist or artist team to design and create a bold, inspired mural in Kodiak, Alaska. This project will transform our station grounds into a community landmark as we celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2026.

The mural will explore the theme of freedom of the press, celebrating the role of independent journalism, community voice, and open expression. We are looking for a design that is visually striking, contemporary, and capable of sparking conversation. This is not intended to be a background piece, but a destination artwork that residents and visitors will seek out, photograph, and remember.

Project Site:
The mural will be installed on a 8.5’x40’-foot conex storage unit at KMXT’s station. The surface is metal and fully visible to the public. Kodiak’s coastal environment requires durable materials and weather-resistant finishing, which will be supported as part of the project.

Compensation:
Artist stipend: starting at $3,500 (negotiable based on experience and scope)
Travel and accommodations to Kodiak to complete installation up to one week
Materials budget provided separately, starting at $500-$1000 (but negotiable)

Project Timeline:
Application deadline: April 15, 2026
Artist selected: May 1
Design finalized: May 2026
Installation: July 2026

Submission Requirements:
Brief statement of interest (1–2 paragraphs)
Portfolio or examples of past work (3–5 images or links)
Optional concept sketch or idea

Selection Criteria:
Artistic quality and originality
Alignment with the theme of freedom of the press
Feasibility and durability of design
Potential to create a strong public-facing landmark

The selected artist will work with KMXT to refine the design and may have opportunities for light community engagement in the process.

This project is supported in part by the Kodiak Community Foundation.

We invite artists to bring their own vision, voice, and style to this work. Our goal is to create something lasting, an artwork that reflects the importance of a free press and the creative spirit of Kodiak.
