Convergence

Organization: International Encaustic Artists Location Morro Bay, CA Entry Fee Paid Entry Deadline February 14, 2022 Exhibition Apr 7 - May 23, 2022
2021 IEA Juried Exhibition at Art Center Morro Bay, CA

Convergence is the act of separate entities coming together to create something new; a unified whole. In biology it speaks to parallel evolutionary patterns where similar traits spontaneously appear across unrelated species, and the same phenomenon can happen across societies as well. Convergence happens when knowledge and methods from varied disciplines and cultures come together to spur new thought and innovation.

In a tumultuous era when we can feel divided from one another physically, emotionally, culturally, and politically, the idea of convergence represents hope. What can we do as artists to create bridges; to reach out and pull together rather than push apart? We invite you to consider and interpret the idea of convergence and submit your work to our new juried show, which will take place in conjunction with our retreat in Morro Bay in April, 2022.

Our Juror will be Pamela Smith Hudson. Smith Hudson is a Los Angeles based mixed media artist. Her interest in encaustic painting began while working in the art material industry. Smith Hudson joined Enkaustikos as an instructor in 2012. She has a long affiliation with Ampersand Art Supply and recently became a part of the Ampersand Artist Ambassadors program. She has been teaching encaustic painting at Los Angeles California Museum of Art and Otis Art and Design Extension program for the last 8 years. Smith Hudson has previously juried the Buenaventura Open Encaustic Competition in 2015. She has collaborated with the Broad Museum on an encaustic educational video in conjunction with the Jasper Johns Retrospective Exhibition. She was also involved in collaborating with the Getty Museum on an educational historical perspective on encaustic painting.

For this exhibition, we are looking for both 2D wall-hung and 3D sculptural work that uses encaustic wax or cold wax as a key component of the piece. Artists are welcome to submit samples of both kinds of work with their entry. Work must not weigh more than 40 lbs, or exceed 40 inches on the longest side.

For each entry, please submit a high quality jpeg image. A good standard is 300 ppi sized at a minimum of 1200 pixels on the longest side. Images should not exceed a maximum file size of 5 MB each. Please include with your entry a short artist statement about the work as it relates to the exhibition theme. In your image description, please indicate if the work is to be hung on the wall, or displayed on a pedestal.

Entry is $25 to all IEA Members in good standing and $35 for non-IEA Members for up to 3 images. Additional images are $5 each, up to 3 additional images.

Each entrant is limited to one entry form.

Submission of work to this exhibition constitutes an agreement to have the submitted images and text included on the IEA website and social media sites for promotional use, as well as possible inclusion in a future edition of the IEA magazine, Wax Fusion. The artists must own the copyright for all artwork and text. Photos not taken by the artist should have permission for use from the photographer and include credit where applicable.

Selected artists will be provided a shipping address. Artists are responsible for all shipping costs and prepaid return shipping labels must be included with artwork shipment. The juror and IEA representatives reserve the right to reject any artwork that does not meet the standards shown in the images supplied. No substitutions are allowed. To be exhibited, entries must be ready to hang or to be displayed on a pedestal.

A commission on sold work will be retained; 25% of the sales price will go to Morro Bay Art Association, and 10% will go to IEA. Work does not have to be for sale to be included in the exhibition.

Deadline for submission is 12 midnight PST Sunday, February 14, 2022

Notification of selection will be sent by email by March 12, 2022

The exhibition opens April 7th, 2022, and closes on May 23rd, 2022, with an opening reception on April 10th, 2022, from 2-4pm.
