This open call is for artists from Washington, DC, Maryland, and Viriginia interested in proposing a solo exhibition for our Fall 2027 installation (August 29, 2027– January 9, 2028) in the galleries at Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital on Capitol Hill, 921 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, Washington, DC 20003.
Hill Center Galleries hosts a yearly Solo Artist Exhibition that consists of approximately 6 artists who will each have a solo show installed in one of our galleries concurrently. Participating artists will be invited to share in a joint opening reception and artist panel talk and holiday reception during the run of the exhibition.
We are looking for a variety of artists making art in any 2D medium that will work to hang on our walls using our cable and hook Arakawa Hanging System.
Applications are open to artists from Washington, DC, Maryland, and Viriginia.
Open to artists 18 years and older.
Solo Artist Exhibitions will be installed from August 29, 2027, through January 9, 2028.
The non-refundable entry fee is $45.
ABOUT HILL CENTER GALLEREIS:
Hill Center is comprised of 3 public floors (Ground, 1st, and 2nd). Each floor has been broken down into "gallery" spaces that include the corridors and rooms of the historic Old Naval Hospital where there is vibrant community activity (including with many children) going on throughout the building every day. Because of this, we are limited to only including artwork that can hang on our walls. There are no pedestals, tables, or display cases available. As a "nontraditional" gallery, any work that may inhibit the use of public spaces for community activities, cannot be installed at Hill Center Galleries. The Hill Center Galleries are housed in a historical building with high ceilings, ample natural light, and each gallery has at least one large wall that is perfect for big art pieces.
Each artist chosen will be designated their own unique gallery space and will be provided with a map of the space with measurements for the walls, as well as detailed hanging and installation instructions for their work.
Each gallery space can display approximately 10 pieces of artwork (fewer if artwork included is large).
Hill Center staff will be available to help with curation and installation, but we request that the artist be available to help on the day of drop-off and installation of their work.
IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER:
Submission Opens: July 30, 2026
Submission Closes: September 3, 2026
Artists will be notified: Late September 2026
Drop-off and installation of work: August 29, 30, 31 2027
De-installation: January 9, 2028
