WHAT THE STREETS HOLD
What becomes visible when no one is performing
A Decagon Gallery Spotlight open call | Juror: Teona Machavariani, Curator and Artistic Director, Decagon Gallery
$1,000 in cash awards
Deadline: January 15, 2027, 11:59 p.m. ET
Notification: February 1, 2027
On view: February 10 – April 10, 2027
A person can enter a photograph without ever knowing it. They may be going home, avoiding someone, carrying good news, or thinking about a life that is invisible to everyone around them. The photograph cannot tell us the whole story. But sometimes it catches the moment when something private appears in public.
WHAT THE STREETS HOLD is an open call for street photography. We are interested in what people reveal without intending to: how they wait, protect themselves, occupy space, move toward one another, or remain separate while standing side by side.
The photographs may be made on streets, in stations, markets, public transport, neighborhoods, or anywhere strangers temporarily share the same place. A person may be central to the image, barely visible, or present only through what they have left behind.
We are not looking only for dramatic events, visual coincidences, or perfectly timed gestures. We are looking for photographs that make us pause because something in them feels known — even when we cannot fully explain what happened.
AWARDS: $1,000 IN CASH
First Place: $500
Second Place: $250
Third Place: $150
Two Honorable Mentions: $50 each
Human Presence Award: free entry to a future exhibition of the photographer's choice
Cash awards are limited to one per photographer. Should a photographer's submissions be selected for multiple awards, the photographer will receive the award of greatest value only.
SELECTED PHOTOGRAPHERS RECEIVE
Inclusion in the curated online exhibition, with a permanent exhibition page on Decagon Gallery
A feature on Decagon's Instagram
Publication in a professionally designed exhibition catalog (catalogs are available for purchase; photographers do not receive a free copy)
Digital badges and certificates
ELIGIBILITY
Open to photographers worldwide, 18 years and older. All photographic processes and styles are welcome. Work must be your own. AI-generated images will not be considered.
HOW TO ENTER
Entry fee: $25 for up to 4 images, $5 for each additional image (up to 10 images). Submit JPGs at least 2100 pixels on the long side, without text, watermarks, or borders, preferably under 4 MB.
