DON’T BLINK – a Dr. WHO 3D Art Exhibition curated by Rob John Proue (Chicago) & Amanda Cohen (L.A.)

The famous "don't blink" episode of Doctor Who is titled "Blink." It is the tenth episode of Series 3, first broadcast on June 9, 2007. Written by Steven Moffat and starring Carey Mulligan as Sally Sparrow, it introduces the terrifying Weeping Angels—quantum-locked predators that turn to stone when observed but move incredibly fast the moment you look away or blink.

The original Doctor Who Television Series debuted with “An Unearthly Child” on Saturday, November 23, 1963, on BBC TV in the United Kingdom with British actor William Hartnell playing the first Dr. WHO from 1963 to 1966, the year I was “born”.

Background by Former Chicago Whovian, now L.A. Standup Comedian, Amanda Cohen

Thank You to all my friends who are still following me after months of desperate posts seeking a home for and help moving my TARDIS doorway facade. Long story short: I built it for a play I wrote in 2013, “Don’t Blink : A Dr. Who Burlesque”, directed by Pixy Belmont, which ran for almost a year at The Gorilla Tango Theater in Chicago; then resided in my apartment til I left Chicago in 2017, after which it languished in uncertainty in basement storage til last week.

I had listed it on The TARDIS Owner’s Club Facebook page and Chicago Marketplace, then reached out to comic book stores around town, including one owned by the producers of a massive local Doctor Who convention. I even talked to the world’s foremost expert on Doctor Who fandom in the U.S., Steven Warren Hill. I had about five months to get it out of my basement before Oct 31.

Thanks to the intrepid Robert Proue, she now lives in Timeless Arts Gallery & Studio at 3040 N Ashland. He volunteered to keep her on display until someone buys her (or til I suddenly have the money and room to bring her to LA).

Thank you to Mark Mensching, Ray Kilovolt Koltys, and Phaedra Black for being on call for moving assistance on short-notice since scheduling was complicated.

When we finally found a time that worked for both of us, Rob met me in the basement and, Doctor as my witness, picked that thing up by himself and hauled it to my rental car, strong as a Judoon and fast as a Weeping Angel. I drove it to his gallery with the base hanging out the back, feeling like an undersized hearse, but when I saw the sunny studio full of Simpsons paintings and a wild collection of other pop art (including Rob’s intricate metal work and collected oddities), I knew the TARDIS was home.

At first the plan was for him to display her until a buyer came along, but we decided to make her an anchor-piece for a Doctor Who-themed gallery show opening after Thanksgiving. Watch for an official call for original submissions…no entry fee! His open call for Simpsons art resulted in hundreds of entries from around the country and a show that opened last week, and some sales!

The saga isn’t over but the panic is vanquished. I love and appreciate everyone who helped, and everyone who wanted to help but didn’t have enough time and/or space. We finally found the time and space.
