HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
Juried Regional Group Exhibition
1223 Potomac Gallery | Washington, DC
December 2026
What does home mean to you?
Home can be a place, a person, a memory, a neighborhood, a tradition—or a feeling we carry with us.
“Home Is Where the Heart Is” is a juried group exhibition inviting artists from the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia region to explore the many ways we understand, experience, remember, and create a home.
Presented at 1223 Potomac Gallery, the exhibition will bring together a diverse range of artistic voices and perspectives during December, a season often associated with gathering, family, tradition, reflection, and returning home.
We invite artists to consider home not simply as a physical location, but as an emotional, cultural, and personal experience.
THEME
Home may be:
The house where you grew up
A family, relationship, or chosen family
A neighborhood or community
A cultural or ancestral connection
A place left behind—or a place newly discovered
A memory that continues to shape you
A sense of safety, comfort, or belonging
A feeling of longing, displacement, or loss
A place you imagine, construct, or carry within yourself
Artists are encouraged to explore themes of family, ancestry, heritage, identity, relationships, chosen family, memory, place, belonging, migration, displacement, and emotional landscape.
We are especially interested in work that offers a personal point of view and invite viewers to consider their own relationship to the idea of home.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We encourage artists to think broadly and personally about the concept of home.
Your work might tell a story about where you come from, document a place that shaped you, explore family or cultural traditions, reflect on migration or displacement, or consider the idea of home as something that is continually changing.
Whether intimate or expansive, literal or abstract, quiet or confrontational, we welcome work that contributes to a meaningful conversation about belonging and the places, people, and experiences that shape us.
THE EXHIBITION
Home Is Where the Heart Is will celebrate the richness and diversity of the DMV artistic community while creating a shared space for reflection during the holiday season.
Together, the selected artists will create an exhibition that asks:
Where is home?
Who makes a place feel like home?
What do we carry with us when we leave?
And can home be something we create rather than somewhere we return to?
At its heart, “Home Is Where the Heart Is” is an invitation to explore the places we come from, the places we create, and the people who make those places feel like home.
SUBMIT YOUR WORK
Artists from Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia are invited to submit their work for consideration.
Up to 3 images | $35 entry fee | Maximum 36" in any direction | All mediums welcome
