SPRING 2027 SPRECKELS GALLERY EXHIBITION
“Reflections”

An exhibition exploring how one artist’s perspective can inspire another.

Applications are now open for the Spring 2027 Spreckels Gallery exhibition, “Reflections,” presented by the City of Coronado Cultural Arts Commission at the John D. Spreckels Center.

“Reflections” is a unique exhibition that brings together two artistic perspectives by pairing original photographs with newly created 2-D artworks inspired by those photographs. Each photograph and its corresponding response artwork will be displayed together, highlighting the connection between the original image and its artistic interpretation. All artwork must have finished dimensions of 16” x 20” in vertical (portrait) orientation, creating a consistent presentation throughout the gallery.

Artists may apply to participate as a Photographer, Responding Artist, or Both.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Photographer

Photographers will submit digital images of original photographs for consideration by the exhibition jury. Selected photographs will serve as the inspiration for response artwork created by participating Responding Artists.

Selected photographs must be printed at 16" × 20" in vertical (portrait) orientation. The City of Coronado will provide consistent 16” x 20” frames for all selected photographs. Photographs will be displayed without matting.

Responding Artist
Responding Artists will submit examples of their existing artwork for jury consideration. Artists do not create their response artwork as part of the application process.

If selected, each Responding Artist will be paired with a selected photograph and, once the pairing is confirmed, will have approximately 10 weeks to create a new, original 2-D artwork with finished dimensions of 16” x 20” in vertical (portrait) orientation.

Applying for Both Roles

Artists who work in photography and another 2-D medium may apply for both roles. An artist selected for both may have a photograph included in the exhibition and may also be paired with another artist’s photograph to create a response artwork.

CREATING THE RESPONSE ARTWORK
Response artwork does not need to reproduce or directly depict the assigned photograph. Responding Artists are encouraged to interpret the photograph through their own artistic practice and may draw inspiration from its subject, color, composition, texture, mood, movement, story, sense of place, or any other element that resonates with them.

EXHIBITION FORMAT AND SELECTION

Because “Reflections” is structured around one-to-one pairings of photographs and response artworks, the exhibition may feature fewer participating artists than a typical Spreckels Gallery exhibition. The limited number of participants will support the collaborative concept and create a cohesive gallery presentation.

All applications will be reviewed through a single jury process. Selection may consider artistic quality and merit, originality, suitability for the “Reflections” concept, variety of artistic mediums and approaches, and overall exhibition balance.

Following the jury process, selected Responding Artists will be paired with selected photographs. Pairings may consider artistic approach, medium, subject matter, and potential connections between works. Selected Photographers and Responding Artists will be notified of their proposed pairing and asked to confirm their participation before the pairing is finalized. Once both participants have accepted the proposed pairing, the Responding Artist may begin creating their response artwork.

Know an artist or photographer you would like to be paired with? Email us at [email protected] with their name. Requests will be considered, but specific pairings cannot be guaranteed.

EXHIBITION & RECEPTION

The exhibition will be on view at the Spreckels Gallery at the John D. Spreckels Center, 1019 Seventh Street, beginning in March 2027.

Artwork intake and installation are scheduled for March 3, 2027. An opening reception will be held at the Spreckels Gallery and will be free and open to the public. The reception date and time will be provided to selected artists once confirmed.

Selected artists are responsible for the delivery and pickup of their artwork at the agreed-upon dates and times. Artists are encouraged to attend the opening reception, if possible, and to help promote the exhibition through their own networks, including family, friends, clients, contacts, websites, and social media.

ARTWORK SALES

Artwork may be offered for sale, with income from sales going directly to the artist. A 20% commission is charged on artwork sold through City-owned and operated galleries. When an artwork is sold, the artist will be invoiced by the City of Coronado for the 20% commission and will be responsible for payment to the City.

Artists are encouraged to be flexible in their pricing. Art sales are by mutual agreement between the artist and purchaser.

Artwork that is sold must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition. Selected artists will be required to provide accurate information for each final exhibition artwork, including title, medium, year, price or NFS (Not for Sale), phone number, email, and website, if applicable.

PROMOTION & DOCUMENTATION
