Everything is a Remix:
exploring source material in visual art.

With the advent of AI creating art based on user prompts mixed with images scraped from the internet, there has been much discussion of Fair-Use, royalties, and creative license. In very few instances are the original creators compensated for the use of their works. (There are AI image generators who gain permission and give royalties to those who contribute material.) One might say that Artificial Intelligence is unethically absorbing data for remixing, but can a computer program really be ethical? If AI Generated Art is unethical, aren't the programmers who write the code, and the people who decide to use it, the unethical parties in this equation? How much is using an AI image generator different from artists being inspired by 'found' or 'borrowed' images, techniques, and ideas? As the saying goes, 'There is nothing new under the sun.'

Let's compare successfully remixed images in work produced using AI, versus work by humans who 'Steal Like an Artist;' using human creativity, emotions and personal experiences.

Do you ever use other artists' images in your work or work process? These can be images used as a reference or inspiration for your work or, more directly, cut up for analog or digital collage. Do you use published or stock photos of public figures in your work? Do you use copyrighted or branded objects as upcycled materials or pieces of your assemblage sculpture? Do you use them to intentionally comment on the product or public figure, or do you consider them to be just another art material? Do you use stamps, transfers or stencils that were created by others?

Submit your work to Everything is a Remix - if you dare! Accepted work will have a brief Artist's Process Statement exhibited alongside the piece, describing any source material that is not their own.

To engage the viewer in a dialogue about sourcing materials for fine art, we are looking for work that contains any of the following:
Unabashedly 'stolen' elements (collage);
'Remixed' images such as photo references without permission;
'Fair-Use' of others' writing, logos or images;
'Repurposed/Upcycled' copyrighted objects which are still recognizable;
And - of course - any work using AI as a reference or as the final product.

ELIGIBILITY

Any 2D or 3D mediums, photography and video which use source material gleaned from others' work.

Artwork will be juried by digital entry only. We reserve the right to refuse any work that is substantially different from the submitted image or lacks professional quality when seen in person.

$5.00 entry fee per piece. Limit 3 pieces and 3 additional views per piece. Artists keep 80% of the sale price of work. Work is insured by the gallery at 50% of established retail value.

** Some ideas for this show were inspired by 'Steal Like and Artist,' by Austin Kleon, and 'Everything Is A Remix,' by Kirby Ferguson. **
