About This Call
The Yountville Arts Commission is seeking an artist to create a fine art mural on the north wall of an underpass in Yountville. The wall is 16 feet tall and 60 feet wide. The project aims to create a welcoming entry to town, celebrate Yountville, reinforce the growing presence of art in the community, and expand the Art Walk into a new area.
The mural must be sophisticated and appropriate to the Yountville brand, known for its world-class restaurants, award-winning chefs, small town charm, and rich history. The design should celebrate all things Yountville, drawing from what inspired settlers to choose this location, the wine and vineyard industry, and the town's culinary fame. The surface is concrete with one metal plate. The medium must be durable and able to withstand outdoor conditions for a minimum of 10 years, with a protective coating required. The design must be suitable for public viewing by all ages and must not include any branding. Approximately 90% of traffic past the mural will be automotive, with growing bicycle and pedestrian traffic as the Napa Valley Vine Trail will travel through the underpass by the end of 2015.
Artists must submit a completed application through CaFE, including a resume, bio, and up to five work samples with reviews of similar works. Proposals must include details about materials, maintenance plan, estimated itemized budget (artist fee, supplies, travel expenses, and design fee listed separately), and a detailed description of the design and completion process including plans for community input. The submission deadline is October 1, 2015. Artists will be notified by October 15, 2015, with a design deadline of December 15, 2015. Installation is dependent upon Town Council approval, Caltrans approval, and artist availability, with installation planned for 2016. This is Caltrans property and final design and application materials will go through the Caltrans approval process, which will be submitted by the Yountville Arts Commission.
