About This Call

The City of Wheat Ridge and the Wheat Ridge Cultural Commission seek qualifications from Colorado-based artists and artist teams to create site-specific public murals for the Youngfield Street corridor between 30th and 40th Avenues in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. A total of $240,000 USD is available for the project.

The Art Selection Committee has identified three primary focal areas for murals: the 32nd Avenue underpass and environs (priority area serving as a new gateway with multimodal crossing connecting to Clear Creek Crossing development), the 40th Avenue underpass (smaller underpass connecting Clear Creek Crossing and a newly constructed hospital to the commercial corridor), and the eastbound I-70 on-ramp. The selected artist or team may provide a vision for the entire corridor or the commission could be split among multiple artists depending on their expertise and proposals. Semi-finalists will be paid an honorarium of $750-$1,500 for design and presentation of proposals.

All applicants must be Colorado residents with skills and experience commensurate with successfully completing a public art installation. The budget is inclusive of all costs including artist design fee, structural engineering, insurance, materials, transportation, installation, equipment, lane closures, site modifications, travel, per diem, project documentation, and contingency. Artwork must be complementary to streetscape designs and make connections to the site and community. All applicants must consider long-term preservation and maintenance, using highly durable, low-maintenance materials. Artwork must comply with traffic engineering, public works, and Colorado Department of Transportation guidelines. The selection process includes a shortlist of semi-finalists who will prepare and present design proposals, with finalists recommended to the Cultural Commission and City Council for approval.
