About This Call

The County of Yolo is seeking artists or artist teams with professional experience in the design, fabrication, and installation of public artworks for a public art project to be integrated into Monroe Detention Center and Leinberger Memorial Center in Woodland, CA. The County wishes to expand the public's experience with the visual arts and create a more visually pleasing and humane environment.

Through this initial call, the selection committee will select up to five artists to present design proposals. Selected artists will be provided a $1,000 design stipend to develop more detailed site-specific proposals. A total budget of $200,500 is available for all related expenses including artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, and documentation. Artists can submit a preliminary proposal for less than the total budget if addressing only one site; proposals requesting the full budget must address both sites.

The Leinberger Memorial Center project includes a new stand-alone facility with housing, support services, and landscaping. Monroe Detention Center provides new housing, program, and day reporting space. Six publicly accessible areas have been identified for artwork placement across both sites. Artwork should draw inspiration from Yolo County's place and people, reflect cultural diversity, provide relatable imagery, evoke comfort and invitation, align with the Sheriff's Office mission and values, and consider site design and architecture. Artwork that is inherently political, religious, or exclusive shall be deemed inappropriate.

Applications must include: artist statement (maximum 250 words), resume (maximum 2 pages), up to 10 digital image samples, support description list (maximum 2 pages), minimum three references with contact information, and preliminary proposal (maximum 250 words). The commission is open to artists and artist teams nationally. All artwork must be securely mounted, contain no sharp edges, and be fabricated from materials that cannot be removed or altered. Consideration must be given to maintenance and vandalism prevention.
