About This Call
The County of Yolo is seeking permanent work(s) of public art to be integrated into the new Yolo Branch Library in Yolo, CA. The new library will serve the multicultural and economically challenged rural communities of Yolo, Dunnigan, and Zamora, providing 2,800 square feet of space for library programming, stable Wi-Fi, computer and technology access, adult literacy tutoring, English as a Second Language programs, bilingual storytime, early childhood literacy programs, and community services. The facility will also contain a community meeting space for library programs, meetings, classes, and services such as food distribution. The County plans to break ground in July 2021 with completion predicted for early Summer 2022.
Three publicly accessible areas have been identified for public art enhancements: Exterior Covered Activity Area-West Wall, Interior Collection Room-North Gable, and Interior Foyer-West Wall. Artist proposals can address one or all three locations. The selected artwork shall draw inspiration from the place and people of the rural communities, including the region's agricultural heritage; reflect the library's role as a community gathering place and hub of civic engagement and education; inspire discovery and creation of new memories among a diverse and multi-generational community; instill community values of respect and appreciation for the indigenous Patwin people and their cultural contributions; and consider the design and architecture of the site.
A budget of $25,600 is available for all related expenses. The County intends to review qualifications and design proposals before determining the total number of pieces to be commissioned. Professional artists who reside in Northern California (specific counties listed) are eligible. Selection criteria include outstanding innovation and creativity in public art development, history of successfully designing and implementing permanent public projects on time and within budget, design excellence and originality, ability to respond creatively to site-specific challenges, expertise in permanent materials for interior or exterior environments, demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with public agencies and community organizations, and ability to meet the project timeline. Submissions must include a current resume (three-page maximum), narrative description of proposed design and materials, rendering of proposed design, four to six images of past work, and image list with title, media, dimensions, date, and budget. Entry deadline: July 16, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Contact: Alison Flory, [email protected], 916.599.2305.
