Wright Interrupted: Symposium of Art Exhibition

Unity Temple Foundation invites artists to submit work for consideration in a juried exhibition, Wright Interrupted, offering artists the opportunity to exhibit work at Unity Temple—Frank Lloyd Wright's most important contribution to modern architecture, a National Historic Landmark and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. The exhibition celebrates the Foundation's 50 years of stewardship and will take place November 3 & 4, 2023.

Wright Interrupted challenges artists to explore how contemporary artistic methods, materials, and social narratives engage with or depart from the visual vocabulary and ideology associated with Wright's design for Unity Temple. The jury is interested in artwork exploring innovative interpretations of nature and the Midwestern landscape, and contemporary ecosystems that investigate intersections of humanity, nature, and the environment in the 21st century.

The exhibition features two categories: Two-Dimensional Artwork (open to artists ages 18 and over from Midwest states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin) and a Digital Mural Competition (open to U.S. based and international artists ages 18 and over). Two-dimensional entries may be any medium addressing nature and contemporary ecosystem themes; three-dimensional work will not be accepted. Digital mural entries must be static images in JPEG/JPG or PNG panoramic format (3:1 aspect ratio or 16:9 format, no smaller than 1920 x 1080 pixels). Entry fee is $35. Cash prizes totaling $1,700 will be awarded: $500 first place, $250 second place, $100 third place in each category. Selected artists will be highlighted in the event catalog, receive recognition through UTF social media, be featured on the Symposium of Art webpage, and receive a printed catalog after the exhibition closes.
