About This Call
Works of Excellence 2023 is a national exhibition highlighting mid-career and professional visual artists running from April 27 - May 27, 2023, produced by The Studio Door in San Diego, California. The exhibition seeks artists to showcase the best of their recent body of work without having to fit a specific theme or style. A public reception is scheduled for Saturday, May 20, 2023 from 6 PM - 9 PM.
The exhibition features two components: in-gallery and online gallery presentations. Based on juror scores, The Studio Door will select works for the physical gallery, while an online gallery accommodates artists unable to ship. All accepted works are eligible for Best in Show awards. Each of the three jurors (Maria Mingalone, Executive Director of Oceanside Museum of Art; Megan Pogue, Executive Director of Timken Museum of Art; and Sonya Sparks, Owner and Curator of Sparks Gallery) will select one artist to receive a Juror's Award certificate and $100 check. All artwork selected will be included in a national exhibition catalog.
Eligibility is open to visual artists residing in the United States. The entry fee is $35 (non-refundable). Submissions must include 4-6 images and an artist statement (maximum 1,000 characters). Image specifications: 1200 pixels or greater on the longest side, JPG or JPEG format only. 2-Dimensional work maximum size is 7.5 feet height by 4 feet width (including frame). 3-Dimensional work must fit through an average doorway and not exceed 8 feet in height. Accepted categories include painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, assemblage, collage, mixed media, fiber art, artist books, ceramics, stoneware, stained glass, and sculpture. Video, film, installation, and works requiring external electrical source require gallery approval. Performance art is not accepted. Artwork must arrive gallery-ready and professionally presented; 2-D work must use plexi only (no glass). Artists grant The Studio Door permission to photograph selected works and use images for marketing and publicity without compensation. For sales, 50% goes to the artist and 50% to The Studio Door. Unsold artwork will be shipped out May 31, 2023. Artists are responsible for shipping costs.
