About This Call

The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County is seeking sculptures and temporary installations for its annual Works in Progress IV. The Arts Council will place 10-20 works at varied and diverse sites in downtown Fayetteville. Works will be leased for a period of no less than one year, with lease amounts ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 for a one-year period.

Artists may submit up to 4 separate entries, with one piece of art per entry and up to 5 images per piece. Selection criteria include artistic excellence, safety, suitability for public display, compatibility with available sites, durability, and maintenance. The selection committee will make recommendations to the City's Public Art Commission, who will forward final recommendations to the City Manager for final decisions.

Artists will have the opportunity to list works for sale and should provide a purchase price with submission, indicating whether the lease fee will be applied toward the purchase. Artists will receive 70% payment on any individual sale; all sold works must remain on display for the duration of the loan period. A travel stipend of up to $500 will be provided for travel expenses. The Arts Council will carry liability and damage insurance for the exhibition and will publicize the exhibit through its website, brochures, social media, and print advertising. On-site recognition will be provided to artists, and artists will be invited to an opening reception. A People's Choice award of $1,000 will be given during the exhibition.

Works must be suitable for outdoor installation and built in a durable, stable fashion, capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions including wind, rain, high temperature, and freezing conditions. Artwork will be installed in close proximity to the viewing public and must not pose hazards or potential for injury. Artists are responsible for transportation of work to and from Fayetteville; the Arts Council will assist with installation equipment and necessary hands-on assistance as agreed in advance. Artists retain all copyright of the artwork, and the Council will credit the artist whenever possible. Installation is scheduled between April 1 and June 1, 2020, with removal between April 1 and June 1, 2021.
