Women's Work

The Indianapolis Art Center announces a Call for Entry to Women's Work, a juried exhibition centered on gender and feminist politics. Historically, women have been excluded from the art world, from being kept out of academies and apprenticeships to being woefully underrepresented in galleries and museums today. The art skills deemed feminine or appropriate for women, such as sewing, embroidery, or weaving, are dismissed as "just" crafts and hobbies. This exhibition, open to women-identified and non-binary artists from the local and national community, seeks to highlight female artists and intersectionality in femininity.

Submission is open to all women and non-binary artists over the age of 18 residing in the United States. Work must be made within the last two years and cannot have been previously shown at the Art Center. All work must be original and made by the artist or artist team. Collaborative works are eligible. All mediums are eligible, though installation artists should contact the Art Center before applying. Artwork must not weigh more than 250 pounds or be larger than 10 feet in any direction. Entry fee is $25 for submission of two pieces, with $5 for each additional piece up to 15 pieces maximum. Accepted work must remain on display until August 10, 2021. All work must come ready to install/hang. For multi-media and other installations, artists should be available to assist with installation (June 9-17, 2021). All work may be offered for sale, with the Art Center retaining a 35% commission on sales.

Notification of acceptance will be sent by May 14, 2021. All artwork must arrive by June 7, 2021. Artists are responsible for hand-delivery or shipping costs and insurance. Work must be shipped in a reusable container with return shipping paid by the artist. Hand-delivered work may be dropped off beginning May 24, 2021. Awards include Best in Show ($350), Best of 2D Work ($200), and Best of 3D Work ($200). The exhibition runs June 18 – August 10, 2021.
