About This Call
The Women's Art Initiative (WAI) of Rock Hill, in collaboration with The City of Rock Hill, is seeking proposals from artists and designers to create a contemporary outdoor design feature, sculpture, or artwork at the entry of Comporium's Telephone Museum on Elk Avenue. The $30,000 public art design commission will celebrate communication and technology, specifically its multi-level history in Rock Hill and its endless possibilities for innovation. The piece should exemplify communication as a concept in constant evolution and serve as an engaging and educating entrance area. The artwork must be child and family friendly and ideally include an interactive or kinetic feature.
The site is located at 117 Elk Avenue in the historic Olde Town District and spans approximately 66' x 20'. Installation areas include an existing pedestal in an oval-shaped bed, the oval bed with or without the pedestal, or the oval bed with surrounding planting beds. The installation may reach up to 12' tall with no overhanging parts permitted. The design must keep paths and walkways clear and safe. Professional artists and designers with demonstrated success in outdoor public works are encouraged to apply. This opportunity is open to individuals 18 years or older residing anywhere in the United States, with preference for artists residing or working in the southeastern United States. Board and committee members of WAI or the selection panel are not eligible.
Proposals must be submitted through CAFÉ by October 31, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Each artist may submit up to 4 proposals. Required materials include a written design proposal with concept, materials, preliminary budget and timeline; 5 digital images of site-specific design ideas and renderings; 5 digital images of professional work; resume(s); and 3 professional references with complete contact information. The $30,000 budget must cover all costs including design, fabrication, site preparation, installation, artist fees, materials, labor, insurance, shipping, and travel. The WAI Selection Committee will review proposals based on experience with public art collaboration, aesthetic merit, artistic quality, connection to themes and community, audience impact, durability, safety, and maintenance requirements. Selection will occur in November 2018, with contract in December 2018, design and development in Winter 2018-19, and construction in Spring 2019.
