About This Call
The Women's Art Initiative (WAI) is a public art advocacy group in Rock Hill, South Carolina, seeking proposals from artists and designers to create a contemporary, outdoor design feature or artwork at the garden entrance of the White Home. The project will commemorate Ann Hutchison White, the "Mother of Rock Hill," and serve as an engaging meeting space and entrance area into the event spaces and garden.
The White Home, built in 1839 and located at 258 East White Street in the historic East Town District, spans more than three acres and includes the main house and several outbuildings. The integrated design feature will be located on the site adjacent to the existing gravel parking lot. Artists may choose to integrate existing landscaping or work with paving surfaces, landscaping, freestanding space, or possible new architectural features. Professional artists and designers with demonstrated success in outdoor public works are encouraged to apply. Artists/designers should reside or have their studios within the southeastern United States, and may work in cooperation with current art students.
The WAI's budget for this project is $14,000, intended to cover all associated costs including artist and apprentice fees, materials, labor, insurance, shipping, travel, and installation. Proposals must include a statement of intent (maximum 1000 words), resume, 6-10 digital images of professional work and designs/renderings, three professional references with complete contact information, and a preliminary itemized budget and timeline. The WAI Selection Committee will review proposals based on experience with public artworks, aesthetic merit, quality of design, connection to themes and community, impact on visitors, durability, safety, and maintenance requirements. Selection and contract are scheduled for April 2016, with design and fabrication in Spring 2016 and installation in Summer 2016.
