About This Call
The non-profit Women's Transportation Seminar Boston Charitable Fund, Inc. (WTS BCF), in coordination with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), announces a Request for Qualifications for a site-specific, permanent public art work to be located in the Red Line/Silver Line Concourse in South Station (Boston, MA). The project celebrates Women in Movement and focuses on the theme of women's role in transportation, which could reflect generations of women moving upward, women enabling the movement of people and goods, women as creators of infrastructure and services, or women helping women move forward. The piece should be dynamic to reflect the theme and its location within one of the most prominent transit hubs in Boston. The Red Line/Silver Line Concourse includes approximately 23,000 square feet with two lobby areas. The number of people passing through this area on an average weekday exceeds 57,000.
Experienced, practicing artists and designers are encouraged to apply. Artists may work as individuals or teams and may work in a variety of media. Excluded from participation are members of the WTS Boston Board, the WTS Boston Charitable Fund Board, and the Public Art Selection Panel. The art budget is not to exceed $150,000 and includes all costs related to project management, final design, fabrication, transportation, delivery, installation, subcontractor and consultant fees, permits, licenses, insurance, and all other associated costs.
The application process occurs in two stages. In Stage I (RFQ), artists submit portfolios (up to 10 digital images from the past five years), CVs, and an artist statement (4,000 characters maximum). An informational meeting will be held July 1, 2014 from 6-7 pm. Up to three qualified artists will be selected to advance to Stage II (RFP). Stage II finalists will each receive a $2,000 honorarium and will develop site-specific proposals due November 19, 2014. Finalists will present proposals on December 9, 2014, with artist notification before December 31, 2014. Applications are submitted online through the CaFÉ website with no application fee. Eligibility is international.
