About This Call
Through the Flower, a non-profit organization co-founded by Judy Chicago and based in Belen, New Mexico, invites New Mexico artists to participate in Wo/Manhouse 2022, a participatory art project inspired by the 50th anniversary of the historic Womanhouse from 1972. The original Womanhouse opened in Los Angeles as part of the first Feminist Art Program and transformed a dilapidated house into a setting for imaginative installations and performances. Wo/Manhouse 2022 continues these historic themes and will be open to proposals by New Mexico artists across the gender spectrum. Artists will transform sixteen rooms in a mid-century modern house located in Belen into works of art exploring the subject of home—addressing themes of love and nurture as well as power dynamics, abuse, gender roles, parenting, and cultural and socioeconomic constraints.
The house consists of 16 rooms over 1,900 square feet and will be open to the public from June 18th through September 25th, 2022. Artists will select a singular room and design a reimagined space. Work on the project will begin May 2nd, with required on-site participation May 2-4 to work with Nancy Youdelman and Judy Chicago, plus required weekly meetings for selected artists. Artists are responsible for designing, fabricating, installing, and deinstalling their artwork, with volunteers available on-site.
Proposals must include: a short narrative description of the proposed project, preliminary budget, CV/resume with current contact information, and up to five sample images of previous artwork. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required. Artists are required to have knowledge of the original Womanhouse and to have watched the documentary film by Johanna Demetrakas. Proposals will be juried by Judy Chicago, Donald Woodman, Nancy Youdelman, Tonya Turner Carroll, and Megan Malcom-Morgan. The house will be open for artist viewings on Saturday, February 19th and February 26th from 12pm–5pm, and by special appointment during February. Questions should be submitted to [email protected].
