About This Call

The City of Lauderhill, Florida is seeking to commission an artist or artist team to create a children's splash pad as a requirement for a grant obtained by the Cultural Foundation of Broward County of Florida. The theme is Living With Wildlife. The artist or artist team will create a mosaic tile splash pad and an interactive iconic centerpiece (similar to Crown Fountain at Millennium Park in Chicago). The splash pad should depict ecological scenes of urban wildlife or children's literature based on animals found in an urban environment. Artists will be expected to engage the community to understand how to sustain urban ecosystems through preserving habitats, reducing property damage, promoting conservation appreciation, and fostering positive interaction with urban wildlife.

The winning artist(s) will receive a $75,000 contract and be responsible for creation and installation of the final work. The project is open to all professional visual artists or artist teams in the United States with experience implementing work in the public realm with government agencies. The splash pad dimensions are 2,000 square feet. The artwork must be fabricated from waterproof, non-slip tile and be durable with minimal ongoing maintenance. Up to three finalists may be selected for interviews via Skype or in person and will each receive a $1,000 honorarium for a completed finished design.

Submission requirements include 6-10 images of past projects, an annotated image list, current resume, and brief letter of interest. The application deadline is Monday, June 18, 2018. The anticipated project schedule includes shortlisting in June 2018, semi-finalist proposals due in August 2018, city commission approval in September 2018, and artwork permitting/installation in February 2019. The $75,000 budget covers all costs including research, design, materials, permitting, fabrication, installation, photography, insurance, proposals, travel, sales taxes, concrete pads, labor, structural engineering, and transportation if applicable.
